MP, residents ask Peter Kenneth to vie for Muranga governor

A section of residents from Mathioya Constituency in Murang’a County have asked Peter Kenneth to run for the Gubernatorial seat in Murang’a because it is his backyard.

Led by Mathioya Member of Parliament Clement Wambugu, the residents said they are happy with the former MP’s move to join President Uhuru in the coming 2017 elections, saying it united the community.

“We are happy that he has joined President Kenyatta so that this community is not divided, his move proves Jubilee Party’s transformative agenda since 2013,” he said.

The MP also said that even though it was Peter Kenneth’s personal choice on which part of the country to represent, he should make the decision as soon as possible.

“He should make a decision as soon as possible whether it will be Nairobi, Nakuru or Murang’a County,” he said.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, residents encouraged the former MP to vie for the Murang’a County governor seat since it is his home.

Peter Kenneth’s move has however been seen as a complication to Jubilee’s arithmetic, as he could become the sixth Jubilee Party candidate in the bid to unseat the incumbent Evans Kidero.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on Sunday, the 2013 presidential candidate was non-committal on whether or not he would vie for the seat, though obliquely indicating a shift in interest from the presidential to governorship seat.

Mr Kenneth had earlier been linked to the Murang’a governorship seat, with some political pundits anticipating a second shot at the presidency, after a failed bid in 2013.

But asked whether he would vie for Nairobi governor seat, the Kenya National Congress leader stated: “I am consulting widely on all counties whose electorate has asked me to consider.”

The KNC leader however stated that he would not be vying for the presidency in 2017, but would instead support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election bid.
