MP wants DP William Ruto to apologise to Mau evictees

Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ngeno has told Deputy President William Ruto to apologise to the people of Mau over allegations that the recent eviction was stage-managed.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Ngeno said that allegations made by the Deputy President that he choreographed the eviction and torching of houses in Mau forest were false and baseless.

“I am very disappointed with the sentiments made by a big man of his calibre,” he said.

“I would wish that he (William Ruto) apologises to me and to the people of Mau who slept in the cold because there houses were torched.”

The sentiments by Ngeno came hours after Deputy President William Ruto alleged that there had been no eviction in Mau forest.

Appearing on Citizen TV’s The Big Question show on Tuesday, Ruto said that there had been no evictions in Mau forest and that the recent evictions were stage-managed by the MP to create a narrative against the Jubilee government.

“There is no single house that the government has burned in Mau,” said Mr Ruto.

“I saw one Member of Parliament who went and lit a house and posed there alone. The owner of the house was not there, the cows and the chicken were not there.”

Ngeno insisted that Kenya Forest Service officers and police officers evicted squatters forcefully from Mau forest in April leading to the death of 2 children.

He said that the government should investigate and resolve the Mau forest issue instead of launching a smear campaign aimed at downplaying the matter.

The Mau issue has been a thorny one for past governments with Raila Odinga taking a hit during his time as Prime Minister in the coalition government for reportedly overseeing the forceful evicting of settlers from the forest.
