MP whisked to safety after mob tries to snatch cops gun

Mwea Member of Parliament, Peter Gitau, was on Saturday, April 8 whisked to safety after a group of 12 men, armed with knives and other crude weapons, stormed a function that the MP was presiding over and attempted to snatch a gun from a police officer, who was providing security at the function.

Mr Gitau had just commissioned Mwangaza Water Project in Kimbimbi Trading Centre in Mwea Constituency, when the incident occurred.

The MP was whisked away in his car under tight security by his bodyguards.

In the incident, the unruly youth robbed the police officer of his Ksh 20,000 and tore his clothes before attempting to snatch his gun.

The police officer, however, managed to shoot in the air, dispersing his aggressors, who escaped into the neighbourhood.

In the incident, Mwea MP Gitau claims that his bodyguard’s arm was twisted as he tried to help the police officer.

The lawmaker alleged that a section of his rivals in Kirinyaga politics hired the goons, who are “ex-prisoners”, to disgrace him.

“Competition is healthy if it is exercised fairly. Mwea constituents shouldn’t be exposed to violence because of our competition as politicians,” said the MP.

The legislator reported the matter at Wang’uru Police Station.
