MPs bodyguard charged with attempted robbery

Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali’s personal bodyguard, Paul Wanyama, has been charged in a Kisumu court with attempted robbery.

Wanyama was arrested on Saturday night alongside the MP’s driver, Clement Sakwa, near Star Hospital in Kisumu.

The police saved the duo from a mob that had descended on them after they attempted to steal using Wanyama’s pistol which is his official firearm given by the National Police Service Commission.

Sakwa was not in court to plead to the charges before Kisumu Chief Magistrate Jesse Nyagah.

He had been taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital after sustaining injuries from the beatings.

Wanyama denied the charges of a plot to commit a felony of robbery with violence and another of using his Ceska Pistol unlawfully and without permission.

He was released on a Sh300,000 bond with an alternative of Sh200,000 cash bail.
