MPs direct land commission to reclaim grabbed hospital land

The National Assembly’s departmental committee on Health wants the National Land Commission (NLC) to revoke the title deed issued to an influential personality in Uasin Gishu County who was allocated land belonging to a county referral hospital.

The committee members, who toured Uasin Gishu referral hospital, expressed concern over the dilapidated state of the public health facility following a long standing ownership dispute pitting the regional government and the former powerful politician.

Led by the acting committee chairman, Robert Pkose, the members asked the National Land Commission chairman, Mohammed Swazuri, to move with speed and revoke the title issued to the politician arguing that he acquired it through fraudulent means.

Pkose said there was urgency for the Mohammed Swazuri led commission to revert the land back to the public without any further delay to enable smooth provision of health care services.

Pkose regretted that donors and stakeholders in the health sector have withheld their financial and material support to the county referral hospital which formerly was a district hospital, due to the land feud that has turned the facility into private property.

He said the hospital which is now under the devolved unit was not receiving money for major face-lift and other development projects due to the dispute that has also halted key operations.

Pkose, who is also the Endebes MP, said that it was wrong for the former politician to hold onto the hospital’s title deed which he allegedly acquired in a fraudulent manner subjecting hundreds of the patients who seek health care services to suffer.

“The county cannot allocate funds towards the refurbishment of the hospital and besides, employment of additional paramedical staff due to the dispute over the land ownership between the county and the former politician,” said Pkose.

He said that it was prudent for the commission to hasten the process of reverting the land back to the public by revoking the title deed which was issued to the politician through the back door during the KANU regime.
