MPs extend timelines for crucial Bills

Members of Parliament on Tuesday afternoon extended by a year the Constitutional timelines to pass crucial pending bills ahead of the August 27th deadline.

The House voted 260 against 11 for the motion to extend the 15 pending Bills, 12 of which are already before the House.

However, despite the full House after MPs were banned from foreign travel till Thursday, there were not enough numbers to move the constitutional amendment Bill seeking to hold elections in December instead of August.

This happened as Parliamentary Accounts Committee Chair Nicholas Gumbo threatened to move sanctions against IEBC chair Isaac Hassan for failure to appear before it for the third time running.

Hassan was required to appear before the committee to answer to questions on an audit report on how the IEBC conducted the 2013 General Election.

Gumbo said the IEBC chair and commissioners could face contempt charges over the ‘casual’ manner in which the commission was taking the invitations to appear before them.
