MPs idolise Prof. Magoha, approve his nomination as Education C.S

Members of Parliament on Wednesday heaped heavy praises on Prof. George Magoha in support of his nomination as Education Cabinet Secretary.

Taking to the floor of the House during a special motion on the report following his vetting last week, the legislators — one by one –listed Prof. Magoha’s achievements during his numerous years in public service, adding that President Uhuru Kenyatta had made the right decision in nomination him.

The MPs further debunked widespread perceptions that the former University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor is arrogant, stating that he is only “firm” in his work.

According to Minority Leader John Mbadi, the outgoing Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) Chairperson convinced the parliamentary committee during his vetting and is the right fit for the docket since he is widely experienced and exposed due to his numerous travels across the globe.

The Suba South MP, who is a member of the Committee on Appointments, added that the report to approve Prof. Magoha’s nomination was unanimous as no MP expressed any disagreement with the findings.

“Prof. Magoha is a person of strong character, and will tell you his mind the way it is. He will not lie to you so that he can convince you to support him. That type of person is the one we need in the Ministry of Education,” said deputy leader of majority, Jimmy Angwenyi.

Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa, who taught alongside the Professor of Surgeon at UoN, supported his imminent appointment saying Prof. Magoha had been successful at every job he has ever been given; citing his achievements while at the university as well as his tenure at KNEC.

“When you do a trend analysis, you can see that everywhere Prof. Magoha has been going he has been successful. And when you extrapolate that trend, you realize that even if he becomes the CS of Education, I have no doubt he is going to succeed,” said Mr. Wamalwa.

Seme MP Dr. Nyikal James, on his part, opined: “I know his no-nonsense stance may sometimes be mistaken by some people as arrogance, but I can tell you Prof. Magoha is humble enough to quickly accept if there is a mistake that he has made. We need him at this time when we have so many commendable projects in the Ministry of Education that need harmonization and competent management.”

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino commended the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) boss for giving him a second chance when he was suspended from UoN, further terming him as “a man who means what he says, and says what he means.”

Mr. Owino – who served as UoN student leader during Prof. Magoha’s tenure as V.C – recommended his appointment saying students around the country will flourish under him.

“For university fees not to be increased, Prof. Magoha must be the Education C.S; For our children to get quality education, Prof. Magoha must be the Education C.S; For our suspended and expelled children and brothers and sisters to be brought back to campus, Prof. Magoha must be the Education C.S,” said Mr. Owino.

“For comrades not to be shot anyhow and killed, Prof. Magoha must be the Education C.S; For our children to be fully God-fearing, Prof. Magoha must be the Education C.S; Whether the sky comes to the ground, or the ground goes to the sky, Prof. Magoha must be the Education C.S. And this is the best decision our President made this year.”
