MPs mull law to regulate supermarkets as suppliers, farmers cry foul

The National Assembly is planning to come up with laws to regulate the setting up of Supermarkets, in a bid to cushion suppliers and farmers from incurring losses in cases of insolvency.

According to Parliamentary Trade, Industry and Co-operatives Committee Chairman Kanini Kega, his committee is preparing a Bill, to ensure the Supermarket chains deposit money in a government depository fund, to ensure suppliers are paid for their services should the retailers close shop.

The Kieni MP lamented that many Supermarkets that have gone under are unable to pay their suppliers, a move he says is not healthy for the growth of the economy.

Two major Supermarket chains, Nakumatt and Uchumi, have gone under in a span of less than 10 years, resulting in loss of huge amounts of money.
