MPs not wrong in demanding send off perk Speaker Muturi

The National Assembly Speaker, Justin Muturi, has denied claims that Members of Parliament are arm-twisting National Treasury to pay them Ksh 3.3 billion as salaries for the eight months which they will not serve.

Muturi says Parliament is engaging with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) on the proposal to pay the MPs the dues demanded by the legislators.

Speaking during the Seventh Leadership Retreat of the National Assembly in Mombasa, Muturi said that the SRC will determine the matter.

On Thursday, February 9, High Court Judge, John Mativo, blocked Treasury from considering the benefits and salaries sought up by MPs until a case challenging the proposal is heard and determined.

Chief Justice David Maraga, IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati and National Assembly Majority Leader, Aden Duale, are also attending the retreat.

Speaking during the event Duale said this year’s budget is likely to be read on June 15.
