MPs reject bid to give senators Sh332m special kitty

As the supremacy war between senators and members of the National Assembly rages on, with Uasin Gishu Senator Isaac Melly saying senators will resort to sourcing for funds from international donors to facilitate their oversight role.

Speaking at Kuinet in Uasin Gishu County, Melly said it was unfair for the National Assembly to withhold funds that would enable them to carry out their constitutional mandate.

He further urged his counterparts to look at the bigger picture of service delivery to Kenyans as opposed to engaging in the ongoing supremacy wars.

Senators want the World Bank to give them money to oversee devolution, arguing that their work has been paralysed by their peers in the National Assembly.

Senators had earlier proposed to be allocated Sh500 million to facilitate their audit of projects in their respective counties in March, April and May.

They had a further Sh1.2 billion allocation in the 2016/2017 budget to be shared across the 47 senators to enable them monitor and evaluate the use of billions of shillings devolved to the counties

However, a total of Sh332 million that would see each elected senator get Sh7 million was in Parliament.

This proposal also triggered fury from a section of governors who claimed senators would use the kitty for political mobilisation.
