MPs shoot down betting craze probe team proposal

The National Assembly has shot down a proposal by Gem Member of Parliament Jakayo Midiwo to launch investigation into betting and gambling in the country.

Last week, Midiwo proposed formation of an 11-member committee of the House to lead a probe into the betting industry in the country.

The House noted the significant growth in the betting industry, adding that there may be loopholes that industry players may use to perpetuate tax evasion and money laundering.

Three betting firms and a host of casinos have cropped up in the past two years with millions of shillings in circulation.

The proposed members of the committee were MPs Thomas Mwadeghu (Wundanyi), Benjamin Langat (Ainamoi), Samuel Chepkonga (Ainabkoi), Kanini Kega (Kieni) and Samuel Gichigi (Kipipiri).

The team was expected to table a report on its findings within 14 days.
