MPs vow to oppose Duale censure motion

Members of Parliament from Narok and Turkana counties have defended Leader of Majority in Parliament Aden Duale over calls for him to step aside for failing to produce a list of suspected members of Al-Shabaab and their financiers.

Narok West MP Patrick ole Ntutu, his Narok South counterpart Lemein Korei, Turkana South MP James Lomenen and Loima MP Kaujah Protus said they will mobilise the 35 leaders from pastoral communities to bring down the motion if it is brought to Parliament.

Lomenen said the leaders from pastoral communities would not allow “one of their own” to be victimised by other leaders.

Korei said he is against a move to oust Duale from the majority leader position saying they will marshall the numbers required to defeat any attempt to remove Duale.

The leaders were speaking during a fundraiser at Olde-rekesi Primary School in Narok West Constituency.

There has been unease within the Jubilee Coalition over a plan to table a censure motion against Duale.

Rift in Jubilee coalition

The motion, largely supported by members of Parliament from The National Alliance (TNA) has faced opposition from their coalition partners United Republican Party (URP) who have vowed to shoot it down when it is tabled on the floor of the house.

Eight TNA legislators, led by Kieni MP Kanini Kega, launched a plot to remove Duale last month for failing to release the list of Al-Shabaab militiamen and their financiers as promised.

United Republican Party members, led by Kericho Senator Charles Keter and Ainamoi MP Benjamin Langat have stated that they will oppose the motion, which is set to be tabled on Tuesday.

The motion to remove Duale, filed by Kieni MP Kanini Kega, came about after 12 people from Nyeri County were killed in last month’s attack at a quarry in Mandera.

The incident occurred months after Duale promised to release of list of suspected members of Al-Shabaab, their sympathisers and their fanciers after a terror attack at Garissa University that left 146 people dead.

Duale has, however, failed to produce the list saying he owes no one the list.
