MPs want more time to fight alcoholism

A section of legislators now want President Uhuru Kenyatta to extend the deadline on the ongoing war on illicit brew.

Led by Juja Member of Parliament Francis Waititu Munyua (Wakapee), the MPs on Tuesday called on President Kenyatta to extend time for war against illicit brews by two more months to enable proper crackdown against the killer drinks.

Munyua said the four days given by the President to fight the brews were not enough and nothing tangible had been done. However, he commended members of the public for their commitment and dedication during the just concluded four days presidential crackdown.

The legislator said a lot of brew had been hidden at homes in Juja Farm, Witeithie and Gachororo areas of Kiambu county and might find their way back to the market sooner than later.

Should the President extend the deadline, according to the legislator, it will give an opportunity for those harboring the outlawed liquors to be smoked out of their hiding and their products destroyed.

Mr. Munyua regretted that Central Kenya is leading in manufacturing of illicit brew and second generation liquor.

“The Presidential directive giving us power to deal with manufacturers and merchants of these brews is what we want extended for two months so that we can deal with those involved firmly and decisively,” stated Munyua.

“Police officers have realized that through illicit brews and matatu businesses one can make money that is why they are spending up to Ksh 5 million to find their way to our region and exploit our people. These officers are the ones allowing the mushrooming of illicit brews, land scandals, murders and exploiting the matatu sector.”
