MRC intimidating Kwale residents not to register as voters

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has rubbished claims that the outlawed Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) wants the Coast region to secede from the rest of the country.

NCIC Secretary, Hassan Mohamed, said that the separatist group has been spreading propaganda so as to cause fear among the residents and stop them from taking part in the ongoing Mass Voter Registration exercise.

Speaking in Kwale County, Mr Mohamed said that the MRC supporters have been spreading propaganda in Matuga and Msambweni regions so as to disrupt the ongoing voter listing.

Msambweni and Matuga, which lie on the southern part of the Coast region, have recorded dismal numbers of new voters with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) listing only 20,000 people.

Mohamed denied claims that the pressure being mounted on people not to register as voters in Kwale County should be addressed by the relevant security agencies within the shortest time possible.
