MRC leader Mwamnuadzi charged with propagating secessionist ideologies

Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) chairman Omar Mwamnuadzi has been arraigned before a Kwale Court after he was arrested Sunday night at his Ng’ombeni home.

Mwamnuadzi appeared before Kwale Resident Magistrate Paul Mutai to answer to three charges relating to alleged illegal activities by the group among them being a member of an outlawed group.

The MRC leader was also accused of contributing and receiving money, 200,000 shillings, with the purposes of advancing MRC activities in the coastal region.

The MRC chairman is also accused of possessing an article bearing the words “Pwani si Kenya”. The prosecution claims the words are meant to incite violence by coastal people against the government and the republic of Kenya.

He denied all the charges and was remanded for five days to allow police conduct further investigations on the matter.

The case will be mentioned on the 29th of January.

In August last year, Kaya elders in Mombasa expressed concerns over alleged disappearance of 50 suspected members of the outlawed Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) in the region.

Speaking to journalists, the elders claimed that several youth have gone missing and yet the government had remained mum over the matter.

The leaders further included a conflict between the Mijikenda community and their counterpart the Wardei community in Kilifi County as part of the issues that needed to be addressed quickly to prevent them from escalating into violence.
