MRC Youths To Receive ID Cards

The move comes after details emerged that the sect was pushing for secession of the coastal region due to lack of identification documents.

The MRC, mostly composed of youths, has been pushing for independence of the coastal region over what they term as government's failure to address historical injustices.

Authorities, led by security officers from the area, established that majority of the members of this outlawed group were concerned about their recognition by the government.

According to Msambweni Sub County Commissioner Mwangangi Mwania, most of the youths in MRC come from Msambweni and Lunga Lunga areas in Kwale County.

Mwania added that the registration exercise will commence after completion of the registration of the Makonde community in Diani.

Originally founded in 1999, the MRC has grown substantially over recent years to spread its secessionist message.

MRC officials cite a long list of dubious historical agreements to justify separation, culminating in a 50-year lease agreement allegedly signed between the Sultan of Zanzibar and the then Prime Minister Mzee Jomo Kenyatta prior to Kenya's 1963 independence.

After expiration in 2013, the coast would gain autonomy, according to MRC officials.

Some historians and government officials, however, claim the 50-year lease agreement is a forgery.
