Mudavadi hints at Ksh35bn scandal in the Health ministry

Amani National Congress Party leader Musalia Mudavadi has said that another mega scandal could be in the offing in the Ministry of Health.

According to Mudavadi, over Ksh35b could be lost through a program that was initiated by the national government to supply medical equipment to the 47 counties.

Addressing the press in Lamu County, Mudavadi said the matter was of utmost national urgency and called on the Jubilee Government to do a thorough forensic audit account for the equipment leased to the devolved units.

He said that it is involves the supply of Imaging, dialysis, theatre and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) machines to two hospitals in every county, a deal he says was signed by governors two years ago but is yet to reach most counties in the country.

Mudavadi now claims that the secretive agreements to lease the equipment were meant to create a monopoly to benefit a cartel of local leaders and suppliers who are minting profits from county governments through inflated prices.

The ANC further challenged the government to disclose who Mr Macharia of Seven Seas, an IT company, is having been allegedly granted a contract to supply imaging equipment and consumables from the General Electric company from USA.

“Is this Mr Macharia in any way related to former Cabinet Secretary for health and now CS Transport and Infrastructure?’’ Mudavadi posed.

He also named another beneficiary, a Mrs Matu of Anjelica Company, which was allegedly given sole supply contract and dealer in dialysis related equipment and consumables from Belco Company in Italy.

Mudavadi also mentioned a Mr Richard Ngatia of Mega Scope Company, who was also allegedly given sole contract to supply theatre equipment from Mindray Company of China, and asked whether it was the same Ngatia featuring prominently in the Ksh5.3 billion heath scandal.

“On the issue of inflated pricing, why is the price of imaging films and dialysis consumables from Anjelica Ksh36,000 and Ksh4,500, while open market fetches Ksh17,000 and Ksh3000 respectively?” Mudavadi posed.
