Mudavadi: Raila-Uhuru agreement is selfish

National Super Alliance co-principal Musalia Mudavadi on Saturday dismissed the truce reached by President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga, terming it as a “conceited and selfish” agreement between two individuals.

Speaking during a press address in Mombasa, Mudavadi said the agreement between President Kenyatta and Mr. Odinga was neither reflective of the wishes of the NASA coalition nor in the interest of all Kenyans.

“The meeting was between two individuals. It does not bear the imprint of NASA Summit as it ought to be. It was not processed through the NASA structures. Indeed nowhere does the MOU allude to or mention NASA, including the signing off. Instead, the two repeatedly invoke their names and personally commit to each other and not to all Kenyans,” he said.

“The MOU is not anchored nor underwritten by any known institutional framework. Neither does it succinctly capture the nagging issues contained in NASA national dialogue agenda for which many have died and others maimed in the recent past.”

Mudavadi noted that the other three NASA co-principals, himself, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula were “neither aware, briefed, consulted nor invited,” to the meeting between Kenyatta and Odinga.

The leader of the Amani National Congress, an affiliate party of the NASA coalition, said the opposition coalition would not abandon its push for electoral justice and reforms in the country despite the truce by Uhuru and Raila.

“Jubilee has remained stubborn and intransigent and their repeated salvos have been an invitation of NASA into a dialogue of “development”. We find such invitation cynical, insulting and underwritten by the impetus to accept injustice and move on. As long as Jubilee remains adamant on the “come we talk development” trajectory reflected in the statement, NASA will not play ball,” he added.

He further sought to rest fears that NASA was on the verge of collapse, adding that the coalition’s fate cannot be determined by an individual.

“There has been apprehension that NASA is on the verge of folding up. Nothing can be farther from the truth. This is because NASA is not about an individual or even the Summit. NASA is an idea owned by Kenyans which will survive and outlive any one individual,” said Mudavadi.

“The NASA Summit will do a thorough audit of the MOU and undertake soul-searching on whether Kenyans were taken for a ride on not by this MOU.”

In a ceasefire address to the nation on Friday, Odinga and Kenyatta said they were ready to walk the talk in chatting the country into a new chapter and devoid of ethnic undertones for the sake of future generation
