Mudslides kill 38 people in Mexico

Mudslides triggered by what was left of Tropical Storm Earl killed 38 people along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, officials said Sunday.

Most of the deaths were reported in the eastern states of Veracruz and Puebla, where heavy rains sent rocks and mud cascading down mountains and hills, burying homes and flooding roads.

Earl made landfall in Belize, Guatemala, and southern Mexico last last week as a Category One hurricane and weakened as it moved inland.

Meanwhile, forecasters have posted a Tropical Storm Warning for southwestern Mexico from Manzanillo south to Cabo Corrientes as Tropical Storm Javier blows through the Pacific.

Meteorologists have not said whether they think it will strengthen into a cyclone.
