Mumias Sugar Company Set To Resume Operations

This follows completion of maintenance works at the company’s sugar factory in Mumias that begun in mid October 2014.

The maintenance works cost the company a whooping Ksh 1.5B

The maintenance exercise is part of efforts by the company’s Management to put Mumias back on the recovery path after recording a Ksh. 2>7B pre tax loss in 2014.

Apart from maintenance, inadequate supply of cane was also to blame for Mumias’ temporary closure.

Area leaders are calling on the government to inject additional capital into the company as it resumes its operations.

The government holds a majority shareholding in Mumias which stands at 71 percent of the company’s shares.

The call comes against a backdrop of calls to the government to curb illegal sugar imports which have also been cited as a major drawback to efforts to revive the local sugar industry.
