Munya blames rivals for ongoing health workers’ strike

Beleaguered Meru County Governor Peter Munya on Thursday claimed that the ongoing health workers strike is a political plot planned by his rivals to end his political career.

Speaking at Meru National Polytechnic during Mashujaa Day celebrations, Governor Munya said that the health workers’ grievances have all been addressed by the county government.

“The clinical officers and nurses are protesting over promotions. We have dealt with the issue and currently about 50 qualified candidates have not collected their letters lying with the departmental head.” said the county boss.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, Meru County Secretary Julius Kimathi issued a notice to the health staff  to abandon their strike or their monthly salaries would be withheld.

Mr Munya has urged the county residents to be patient as the government works to resolve the standoff that is now entering its fourth week and putting immense pressure on the facilities of its neighbour Isiolo County.

“We have the best scheme for our health workers. They are enjoying medical cover besides other benefits. If they are not satisfied, what am I supposed to do as the governor?Meanwhile we are inviting applications from qualified health workers who we will work on contract as the negotiations about promotions continue,” said Mr Munya. reiterated.
