Munya has mismanaged county cash Meru MPs

Members of Parliament from Meru County are accusing Meru Governor Peter Munya of misusing county funds, saying that some of the costs of county projects are inflated.

Speaking at Makutano in Imenti North Sub County, MPs Rahim Dawood (Imenti North) and Mithika Linturi (Igembe South) claimed that renovation of Mru Hotel, which was billed at Ksh.200 million, was extravagant.

“Ksh.200 million is too much. Munya should tell us who was given the contract to build the hotel. Including the Kinoru stadium that they claim will be one of the best stadiums in East and Central Africa. The stadium does not even look like a stadium but they say they want more money,” said Dawood.

The two MPs also faulted the governor for failing to report on the use of moneys meant for the construction of Kinoru Stadium, further complaining that it has taken too long to complete the project.

The leaders also claimed that the governor had failed to serve the county, and should be out-seated from his position.

Two weeks ago, differences between Meru Governor and Kiambu Senator, Kimani Wamatangi, played out during Senate oversight committee sittings, with the two engaging in a bitter exchange of words.

Trouble started when Wamatangi hit out at Munya for refusing to honor Senate summons to respond to audit queries on how Meru County has spent public funds, instead belittling him at a public rally.

However, Munya has instead faulted the Kiambu Senator for using Senate Public Accounts and Investment Committee to seek answers to political statements made outside the committee.

It took committee chair, Anyang’ Nyong’o’s, intervention to calm the two parties, with Munya hard pressed to explain how 5.2 billion shillings was spent by his county in the 2013-2014 financial year.
