Murang’a County receives portable ultrasound machines

Expectant mothers in Kandara, Murang’a County will now benefit from portable ultrasound machines for their unborn babies after two organisations donated the machines for use by mothers unable to visit hospitals.

The three machines donated by NAMM Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with Ahadi Kenya Trust will become a component of Ambulance Mashinani, mobile clinics launched by Ahadi Kenya.

According to Hassan Mahummud, a director at NAMM Pharmaceuticals, the machines can be used on any laptop or tablet and can run on any software.

“This machine is revolutionary. It is the future stethoscope and will assist expectant mothers to understand and bond with their children even before birth,” Muhammud said.

Ahadi Kenya CEO Stanley Kamau added that the project had been initiated in line with the anti-jigger campaign, noting that since most jigger infested mothers were immobilised, they would only be required to contact social workers who will visit them with the machines and a computer.

He also noted that many expectant mothers had never attended prenatal clinics, mentioning that the machines will make a big difference in maternal care in rural areas.

“The social worker will be able to instantly determine if there is a problem and email the ultrasound images to any other hospital for specialised treatment,” he said.

He further added that social workers would undergo training to help them efficiently operate the machines as his organisation rallies the support of other partners to donate at least three machines in every county.
