Muranga Countys Multi Million Dairy Programme

Already, 35 milk coolers have been imported and will be distributed to the wards across the County.

Murang’a governor Mwangi Wa Iria on Thursday identified the dairy programme as the county flagship programme costing Sh 500 million and in which thousands of farmers will be rescued from losing their money to hawkers.

Two months ago, county government in line with the programme aunched a Sh 48 million artificial insemination programme targeting to improve livestock breed estimated at 250,000 dairy farmers in the region.

The governor said the County government chose to support dairy programme, which will have direct impact with the community which has the years remained exploited by middlemen.

Murang’a County has a potential of producing 200,000 litres on daily bases if the livestock farmers follow advice given by animal experts.

Flagging the trucks ferrying the coolers, Wa Iria said every year the county government will be identifying a major programme that will have direct impact in the community.

He further added that the installation of the coolers will help farmers store their milk for days as they bargain for better prices from the processors.

He was backed by his Deputy Mr Augustine Gakure Monyo, and county secretaries Eng Amos Njoroge (Transport and Infrastructure), George Kamau (finance and Planning) and Edward Muiruri (Agro Marketing and Cooperative).

A plant to manufacture animal feeds will soon be operational following installation of the machines and engaging experts to ensure production of high quality feeds.
