Murang’a leaders urged to embrace unity

Murang’a County Senator Kembi Gitura on Friday called for peace and cohesion among leaders in the county in the wake of evident political differences among them.

Kembi, who is also the deputy speaker to the Senate, condemned the political incitement and interferences in the county, noting that leaders ought to preach peace rather than division.

He was speaking during a visit to the Murang’a County Assembly offices a day after unknown people vandalized equipment at the deputy governor’s office, saying it was high time the leadership of Murang’a came together to solve the differences, which could lead to bloodshed.

The senator further asked the members of the county assembly to engage in dialogue with the governor which will aid in repatriating peace in the county, he reminded them of the promises they made to the residents who are still optimistic to see them delivered.

“If you fight each other, Wananchi who voted for you will definitely suffer and development will be paralysed. I will never stop calling for peace among leaders who should sit down and discuss issues that face Murang’a as a county”.

The Murang’a senator also noted that elected leaders should at all times be bound together by unity of purpose to achieve the intended objectives, and to deliver on their promises to the people.

The rifts in Murang’a County’s leadership became evident when MCAs moved a motion to impeach their governor on 21st October, 2015 where 34 out of 49 Members of the County Assembly voted in favour of the motion.

The MCAs had accused wa Iria of gross misconduct, accumulating unsustainable debt and misappropriation of public funds.

Wa Iria however, survived this ouster attempt after the Senate Committee looking into his impeachment found that the particulars used to impeach him did not meet the Constitutional threshold.

Following the impeachment attempt, MCAs in the county lamented they have been receiving threats from unknown individuals who have gone to the extent of attacking their business premises. The MCAs are now linking the threats and attacks to their support of wa Iria’s impeachment motion.
