Muranga MCAs demand better security

Members of the Murang’a County Assembly are calling on the national government to reinforce security at the assembly following an incident where the deputy Governor’s offices was broken into and valuables stolen.

Speaking during a press briefing to condemn the vandalism that occurred on Wednesday evening at the CDM building in Murang’a town, the MCAs urged the government to carry out forensic investigations and accused the security officers in the area of sleeping on their jobs.

In a statement read by Bernard Wanyoike, MCA for Gaichanjiru Ward, the MCAs said that recently, the county assembly premises were raided where the Speaker’s office and a vehicle belonging to county assembly were nearly torched but no action has been taken nor anyone brought to book.

Wanyoike accused the security team in the area of laxity noting that several of his colleagues had received threatening phone calls and messages which have been reported but no action has been taken yet.

The deputy speaker of the assembly Gachui Mungai echoed Wanyoike’s sentiments adding that security agencies should try their best to curb insecurity that is on the rise.

Mungai also expressed concern that if the situation is not contained it could easily lead to bloodshed.

This outcry comes after area OCPD Johnston Limo issued a statement on the vandalism of County Assembly offices saying that investigations are underway.

Limo also revealed that the incident was seemingly an inside job further attributing it to the recent politics surrounding the impeachment of Governor Mwangi Wa Iria which has brought a rift between leaders.

The OCPD now says that there has been tension between the MCA’s and the larger leadership.

Limo has challenged the leaders to put their differences aside and preach peace for the sake of the people.

The embattled Governor had been impeached by Murang’a County Assembly on October 21st, 2015 when 34 out of 49 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted him out.

The MCAs accused Wa Iria of gross misconduct, accumulating unsustainable debts and misappropriation of public funds.

Wa Iria, however, survived this ouster attempt after a Senate Committee looking into his impeachment has founds that the particulars used to impeach him did not meet the constitutional threshold.
