Murang’a residents to benefit from borehole project

More than 10,000 residents of Gaturi Ward in Murang’a County are set to access clean and safe domestic water after the commissioning of a borehole in the area.

Speaking during the commissioning of the project, Kiharu Member of Parliament (MP) Irungu Kang’ata lauded East African Breweries Limited (EABL) foundation for partnering with Kiharu CDF to fund the project, saying the move will go a long way in improving the livelihood of residents.

“This water project will bring relief to the residents of Gaturi who for a long time have suffered the burden of trekking long distances in search of the precious commodity,” said Kang’ata.

According to Kang’ata, the borehole – which was dug at Kaigwa Primary School – is expected to produce 15,000 liters of water per hour thus enabling many families to be connected to clean water.

“For many years, parts of Gaturi Ward have been experiencing challenges to access clean water considering its hilly terrain which hinders connection of piped water.”

Kang’ata added that the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) will embark on constructing a 100,000 litre water tank to ease storage and supply of water to various parts of the ward.

“Water projects will continue to receive a maximum allocation in local CDF fund, so far many parts of the constituency have been connected with clean water,” he stated.

EABL Corporate Relations Director Eric Kinoti also expressed the commitment of the company in enhancing community’s access to water and sanitation, adding that EABL will continue partnering with government bodies to ensure that a majority of Kenyans access clean water.

“We understand that access to water and sanitation is critical to sustainable development and it contributes to improved health and education outcomes that are linked to poverty reduction,” he noted.
