Muranga to hire 1,000 ECDE teachers

The County Government of Murang’a will recruit about 1,000 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in a bid to improve education standards in ECDE centers.

Governor Mwangi Wa Iria said the teachers will be employed as care-givers as the county government awaits ruling in a case between the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on who should employ ECDE teachers is concluded.

He said the employment of the teachers will mark a beginning to the transformation of the early childhood education sector.

The Governor, who was speaking during a meeting with ECDE teachers in Murang’a Thursday, added that the county government will start a feeding programme in all the 650 ECDE centers.

“We want to make sure each of the 25,000 ECDE pupils we have in the county gets free lunch,” said Wa Iria.

He added that the county government will make ECDE learning free to encourage higher enrollment especially from disadvantaged families.

“As a county government, we hope that the free learning and lunch will double the number of intakes in our ECDE centers especially from the lower parts of Murang’a which are affected by drought,” added the Governor.

The Governor urged all parents who have not enrolled their children to do so.

“We will make sure all centers have the basic facilities required for the early childhood education including playgrounds in a bid to give children a firm education basis.”
