#MurderForProfit: Evans Kasyoka charged with killing nephew over Ksh.9M insurance cover

A man accused of killing his nephew over a Ksh.9 million life insurance policy was on Monday arraigned at the Machakos High Court where he denied the charges.

Evans Masaku Kasyoka was arraigned before Justice George Odunga where he pleaded not guilty to charges of killing 27-year-old Eric Makau Musyoka.

Kasyoka will remain in police custody until Thursday, September 20 when his bail application will be determined.

The prosecution opposed the bail application, arguing that the accused was a flight risk, a position opposed by the defense lawyer Victor Kariuki.

Kasyoka was arrested in August following an investigative feature aired on Citizen TV exposing the incident.

It is alleged that the accused is the one who arranged for the life insurance policy in the name of his nephew and then allegedly planned for his killing.

After the 27-year-old who had no formal employment died, the accused immediately commenced the insurance claim.

Following the exposé by senior investigative reporter Purity Mwambia, the DPP issued a statement saying he had directed for immediate action to ensure justice is done.

Last month, a medical examination sanctioned by Machakos Deputy Registrar Nelly Kenei confirmed that the accused was of sound mind to stand trial.
