Murkomen denies links in the NYS tendering scam

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen has denied being party to the National Youth Service (NYS) scam following an affidavit by former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru linking him to the 791 million shillings loss at the service.

Addressing the press at Parliament buildings, Murkomen also denied playing any role pushing for the impeachment of Waiguru, and asked her to avoid diversionary tactics.

The Elgeyo Marakwet Senator, however, admitted that he offered legal services businessman Ben Gethi.

The Senator also stressed that Waiguru’s bid to divide the Jubilee coalition partners will not succeed and asked her to carry her own cross.

Murkomen’s statement came hours after Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter and his Kapseret counterpart Oscar Sudi asked him to step aside and called for investigations into the allegations levelled against him and the National Majority Leader Aden Duale.

On Tuesday, an affividavit that had been filed by Waiguru, caused a stir after it linked close associates of the Deputy President including his personal assistant Farouk Kibet, Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and Leader of Majority in Parliament Aden Duale to the saga.

In the affidavit, Waiguru claimed that during the initial investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Duale and Murkomen, according to Waiguru, threatened the former assistant director of NYS Aden Harakhe, warning him of dire consequences should he fail to instruct the DCI to stop the investigations.

Waiguru claimed that Harakhe informed her through a memo that Murkomen had visited him in his office after he was allegedly directed by then Principal Secretary Peter Mangiti.

According to Waiguru, Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, at around the same time, visited her office and stated that he represented his clients whose funds had been stopped at IFMIS and bank accounts frozen by the DCI.

The frozen accounts were mainly associated with businesswoman Josephine Kabura and Ben Gethi.

Waiguru claimed that Harakhe did not bow to pressure from Murkomen.

The NYS scandal has rocked the cuntry in recent months, with many Kenyans demanding answers to how the 791 million shillings disappeared from the youth service.
