Murkomen in trouble as leaders, residents accuse him of self interest

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen found himself in unfamiliar waters when leaders and a section of residents of the county booed him, accusing him of failing to advance their security interests despite his closeness to the national government.

Speaking after staging a demonstration in Marakwet East led by Governor Alex Tolgos and former Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo, the leaders threatened to quit the jubilee party ahead of next year’s polls if the rising insecurity in the county is not addressed.

For several years, two communities living in Elgeyo Marakwet county have been embroiled in perennial conflict that has often led to loss of life, property and livestock.

The leaders staged demonstrations in Marakwet East to protest against the reported killing of one person as a result of insecurity in the county.

Kimaiyo, who is eyeing the senatorial seat currently held by Senate Deputy Majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen, faulted security forces for what he termed their lackluster response to the region’s challenges.

A feeling shared by governor Tolgos.

Our people have invested heavily in this region. And we are asking the national government to supply security,” said Tolgos.

But a political twist was in the air. Senator Murkomen on the receiving end.

His closeness to the powers that be, seen by many here as just of personal benefit.

Murkomen had to leave the venue after it became unbearable to follow the proceedings.

Murkomen is seeking to dethrone Governor Tolgos, and was recently engaged in a political spat with Kimaiyo who is seeking to dethrone him from the Senate seat.

The political realignments in the county appear to have united Kimaiyo and Tolgos in their political battle against Murkomen.

Ahead of the 2017 polls, all aspirants in the region will have to battle it out for the jubilee ticket, that could make or break their political careers.
