Museveni commissions first suspended cable bridge in Uganda

President Yoweri Museveni commissioned the first suspended cable bridge in Jinja, Uganda on Wednesday.

The 525 metres long bridge named  ‘Source of the Nile Bridge’  connects Jinja and Buigwe Districts over River Nile.

It has been under construction for about 48 months being funded by a loan from the Japanese government under Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

President  Museveni, who presided over the the launching ceremony in Jinja, said that the use of the bridge will be restricted only to vehicles and pedestrians.

Boda bodas and cyclists will be using the Old Bridge in an effort to reduce congestion on the road between the two districts.

The Ugandan President said most of the technical staff involved in the construction of the bridge were Ugandan locals.

He added that the project was completed within the cost, budget and almost the time framework commending the contractor, consultants and project managers for using the local staff on the construction of the bridge.

“This is a season of big projects. This is just one of them. As you heard I recently commissioned the Entebbe Expressway; the following year I will be commissioning a number of hydro power plants,” said Museveni during the launch.

According to the Ugandan government, the project is aimed at providing guarantees in trade movement on the Northern Corridor Route (NCR).

It is also expected to ensure safety of the Northern Corridor Route transportation system by relieving traffic  from the existing old structures.
