Musevenileads anti-corruption walk in Uganda

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has come under heavy critisim, after leading a march against corruption on Wednesday.

Museveni, who has ruled the country for 33 years, led the walk from Constitution Square to Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, aimed at intensifying the fight against corruption in Uganda.

Among those who were present during the event include Ministers, Members of Parliament, members of civil society organizations, religious leaders and other citizens.

Joined different government agencies, religious, traditional, civil society leaders and fellow countrymen in the anti corruption walk. I am very glad we turned up in big numbers as we continue the war towards a corrupt free Uganda,” Museveni said on Twitter.

Museveni also did warm ups during the event, saying the walk was a symbol of good health as he had lost 40kgs of weight, from 106kg to 76kg through  long distance walks.

“The walk symbolises our willingness to fight corruption. Additionally, this walk has been a fitness exercise. The increase in cases of diabetes, heart diseases especially in urban areas is because people eat too much and do not exercise” he said.

However, critics were quick to dismiss the event, which many terming it as a ‘joke’ and a ‘PR stunt’. According to a report released by Transparency International last year, Uganda is placed in the 149th position out of 175 countries as far as corruption is concerned.

The country has witnessed massive corruption scandals, especially during the 33 years rule of Museveni, which made many dismiss the anti corruption efforts.

One user on twitter, Enock Ruhimbaza, advised Museveni to do an audit of the event because he would be shocked.

“Thank you your excellency for leading anti corruption walk though I strongly believe that if we can audit well today’s expenditure on anti corruption walk, you may be shocked” he said.

Another one, Chuma Banjwa believes God has forsaken Africa if corruption, diabetes and eating too much can be solved by a walk.
