Muthama wants Governor Mutua arrested over alleged abuse of office

A faction of elected leaders from Machakos County want Governor Alfred Mutua arrested for allegedly flaunting the Public Procurement and Disposal Act during the purchasing of motor vehicles for his county executives over two years ago.

Led by Senator Johnstone Muthama and Women Representative Susan Musyoka, the leaders say that Dr. Mutua openly defied the procurement act but no action has been taken by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Senator Muthama said that it was unfortunate that Mutua was still walking a freeman despite using his office as the Governor to influence the procurement process.

He also accused EACC Chief Executive Officer Halakhe Waqo of being a ‘friend of Mutua’, something he says compromises his execution of duties.

He alleged that Waqo and Mutua are very close friends and often visit each other and that it would be difficult for Waqo to prosecute his friend.

They have also accused Dr. Mutua of deliberately lying to investors that he would provide land for construction of the Machakos City that was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta over an year ago.

Senator Muthama said that there is no free land that existed in the county as promised to investors by Dr. Mutua.

The outspoken Senator also accused the National Land Commission (NLC) chair Dr. Mohammed Swazuri of entering into a ‘deal’ with Governor Mutua to gazette the land that was promised to investors without stakeholders and public participation and now wants him to de-gazette it immediately.

He wants the County Government of Machakos to compensate those who may have been affected by the allocation of the gazetted land just like the government did with the controversial Waitiki Land in Coast region.

But in a quick rejoinder, Dr. Mutua rubbished the legislators’ claims saying that Senator Muthama and his colleagues have no agenda for the people of Machakos and should not interfere with his development plans.

He said theirs’ was a personalized attack on his person and character but that will not stop him from doing what he was elected to do.

“The people want development and not abusive statements from their leaders. Muthama and the MPs are also elected leaders and must account on what they have done for the people of Machakos in the last three or so years,” said Mutua in a statement.

“Opposing the Gazettment of the Machakos City by the leaders clearly shows their intention is to oppose development and preach the politics of poverty. They want our youth to remain unemployed and our women to continue being poor so that they can continue manipulating them during elections.”

Dr. Mutua maintained that the Machakos City will be developed for the sake of the millions of youth who are unemployed.
