Mutua proposes Ksh.50K fine for school bus drivers operating past 7pm

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has proposed that school bus drivers found to be operating their vehicles past 7pm be arrested and fined Ksh.50,000.

According to him, stiff penalties will deter people from breaking the rules and ensure that students are not put at risk.

“In our county, every week relatives bury their loved ones who have died as a result of road accidents, many of which are preventable,” the post on Mutua’s Twitter page reads.

For the proposal to be implemented, the new rules will have to be debated at the Machakos County Assembly and a motion passed.

Other proposed rules are for those found driving unroadworthy vehicles; they face arrest and a fine of Ksh.200,000.

Further, passengers or drivers found smoking inside a vehicle are to pay a fine of Ksh.150,000 if the proposal goes through..

“Break the law on Machakos roads and pay dearly!” the notice from Governor Mutua warns.

A Ksh.20,000 proposed fine awaits people found driving vehicles with no lights, while a Ksh.100,000 fine has been proposed for obstruction of other cars.

Littering in Machakos County will also elicit stiff penalties of Ksh.15,000 for an individual and Ksh.50,000 for a group, if the proposal is passed.
