Muturas appointment of Nairobi County alcohol licensing committees suspended

Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura’s appointment of members of the alcoholic drinks and licensing committees has been suspended.

The Employment and Labour Relations Court issued the orders after the Speaker had announced the members through a Gazette notice.

“It is hereby ordered that pending the inter partes hearing and determination of this Application and Petition, conservatory orders be and are hereby issued suspending Gazette Notice No.86 of 12th January, 2021 announcing that the 2nd Respondent has appointed members of Nairobi City Sub-County Alcoholic Drinks and Licensing Committees,” reads the court order.

The petitioners, Eric Kiogora and Stephen Mwangi, accuse the Speaker of breaching the contracts of the board members who were in office at the time he issued the notice.

Speaker Mutura made the appointments while serving as acting Governor following the impeachment of Mike Sonko.

The Nairobi County Government, the acting Governor, the County Chief Officer for Commerce and Indutrialization have been listed as respondents in the petition.

They have 14 days to file their response and the mention for judgement has been set for March 22, 2021.
