Mututho ordered to record statement over drug cartel claims

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has ordered NACADA chairman John Mututho to record a statement with police over his claims that senior officers are protecting drug cartels at the University of Nairobi.

In a statement sent to newsrooms on Thursday, Boinnet said “this is unacceptable and we take great exception to such reckless statements that are not based on facts but are clearly aimed at tarnishing the name of the police for reasons that are unknown to us.”

In his claim, the NACADA chairman fingered Central OCPD Paul Wanjama as one of the officers protecting the cartel that allegedly operates from the University of Nairobi’s hall 9.

Mututho’s claims also come after security officers linked organized gangs to the violence that erupted over a disputed University of Nairobi SONU elections that saw the re-election of Babu Owino as the chairman.

Mututho is now advising against the disbandment of the student’s union, SONU.

His remarks come just days after students from the university held demonstrations for two days protesting Babu Owino’s re-election as SONU chair for the fourth time, contrary to the school’s constitution which puts a term limit of two.

According to article 19 (6) of the constitution: “a candidate shall not be eligible to contest for the same executive position in which he/she has served for 2 consecutive years.”

On Saturday, police arrested more than 20 university of Nairobi (UoN) students following the violent protests, bringing traffic to a standstill on sections of Uhuru Highway and University Way as the students pelted cars with stones, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

Police were forced to use teargas to disperse the protesting students who claimed the hotly contested students’ elections were rigged.

On Monday, SONU offices were set ablaze after the students went on a rampage yet again

The University of Nairobi has been closed indefinitely.
