Mwakwere elected Wiper Party chairman replacing Kivutha Kibwana

Former Cabinet minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere has been elected Wiper Party chairman replacing Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana who resigned in January this year.

Mwakwere’s election was announced on Sunday at a retreat of Wiper Party’s National Executive Council held at the Kenya School of Law in Karen, Nairobi.

Mrs. Anne Kanyi was elected vice chairperson.

“The election of the Chairman and Vice-Chair will be ratified at a National Delegates Conference whose date will be announced later,” said the party.

Governor Kibwana cited “issues within the party” for his decision to quit as Wiper Chair.

“There have been issues within the party, especially between myself and the party leader. I sat down with the people of Makueni and told them I could no longer be the (Wiper) party Chair and they said it was fine as it is not mandatory for me to hold that position in order to serve them,” said the governor on February 4, 2019.

Mwakwere joined the Kalonzo Musyoka-led party after ditching Jubilee in 2017.
