Mwiki tout beaten for overcharging died of pneumonia, suspects freed

Two officials of Mwiki Sacco Limited (MSL) who had been accused of beating a conductor to death for overcharging passengers have been set free by court.

This was after the court was told on Thursday that an autopsy report from the hospital showed that the deceased, Julius Kamau, died of pneumonia and not due to assault by the suspects.

Following the report, the court had to release the two officials; John Kibe Nyagah and Geoffrey Ngamau.

“We pray that the suspects be released because we don’t find anything incriminating them to the murder of the deceased,” the court was told.

The court, however, noted that police will continue with investigations into the incident and if found culpable, the two will be rearrested.

The suspects were detained for two more days to enable police conclude investigations.

The deceased was allegedly beaten for charging passengers plying the Nairobi-Mwiki route Ksh.100 instead of the normal Ksh.80 fare on April 23.

He was treated at Kiambu level five hospital before his health deteriorated leading to his death.
