My daughter only had Ksh.9K: Waititu defends daughter at Senate impeachment sitting

Embattled Kiambu Governor Ferdinard Waititu on Tuesday defended his daughter Monica Njeri before the Senate during a plenary sitting over his impeachment.

In his opening statement, he accused a network of bloggers from Kiambu of spreading lies about him prior to his impeachment.

“Honorable House, you will see in this sitting, some politicians have paid bloggers to spread false stories about me and my family, they are all lies,” he said.

The Kiambu County boss further rubbished claims that sleuths from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission had discovered Ksh.100million in his daughter’s bank account.

According to him, his daughter only had Ksh.9,000 at the time of the said investigations but rumors were spread to make it seem like there was more.

He was referring to posts that emerged on on social media last year claiming that his daughter’s accounts had been frozen.

None of those claims were verified.

The Senate is expected to sit for two days — January 28 and 29 and deliberate on Waititu’s impeachment.

Governor Waititu was impeached by members of the Kiambu County Assembly on December 19, 2019 for abuse of office and gross misconduct.

If any of the charges is upheld by the House, Waititu will lose his seat as the Kiambu county boss.

Meanwhile, Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata has asked the Senate to punish county bosses accused of rampant graft starting with Waititu.

In an update on Twitter, Kang’ata argued that the only way to tame corruption within the counties was to send errant Governors home.

“Our counties have been looted left, right and center. Atleast one chief executive of a county needs to go home to send the right message. Senate needs to support HE efforts of fighting corruption. Tomorrow at the Senate’s proceedings for Kiambu County- may be this is it!” his post reads.

The EACC is seeking to have Waititu, his wife and two daughters prosecuted for engaging in fraudulent procurement.

EACC implicated five companies directly owned Waititu’s wife Susan Wangari and their two daughters; Monica Njeri and Diana Wangoko.

In its report, EACC averred that the companies were reportedly paid Ksh.18million between 2017 and 2019 for trading with the county.

Three of the companies where his wife and daughters are directors were apparently registered when Waititu became governor and one was registered in 2010.
