My life is in danger, says Homa Bay County Assembly Speaker

Homa Bay County Assembly Speaker Elizabeth Ayoo now says her life is in danger after she was physically attacked by a section of MCAs during the Tuesday afternoon session.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi on Wednesday in Kisumu after seeking treatment and recording a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in the town, Speaker Ayoo also dismissed reports that the Assembly mace had been stolen saying it is in her custody.

The embattled Speaker further alleged that the attack might have been an attempt to kill her and so as to replace her in the assembly. She added that the same person who led the onslaught against her is the one who insisted on chairing the Wednesday session.

“When I was making an announcement, before I even finished, some MCAs came to where I was standing and started beating me up. The manner in which I was accosted, with some even wielding knives, shows that some of them had ulterior motives… specifically to kill me,” said Ms. Ayoo.

She urged the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party disciplinary committee, police officers as well as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to aid in bringing peace to the Assembly.

“I came to seek treatment and record my statement in Kisumu because I am not safe in Homa Bay. MCAs have become people who can harm anyone at any time without any fear of the law,” she stated.

“Women MCAs are now operating in fear because the men have overpowered us and are beating us left, right, and center. I have already recorded a statement at the police station and I hope they will move swiftly so that the people who have put my life in danger are brought to book.”

Ms. Ayoo was on Tuesday attacked using chairs and bottles of water by some MCAs who were unhappy with how she was presiding over the House proceedings.

She was accosted while reading a report from the ODM party about changes in the county assembly leadership including the office of the majority leader.

This, however, did not go down well with a section of the MCAs, led by the current leader of majority Walter Were, who said the changes were not the original report from the party headquarters.
