Nairobi County Assembly has rejected Migunas nomination

Governor Mike Sonko will have to look for another Deputy Governor after the Nairobi County Assembly nullified the nomination of Miguna Miguna on Tuesday.

Speaker Beatrice Elachi explained that she was not in a position to debate the nomination of Miguna because a state officer cannot hold dual citizenship. She at the same time referred the name back to governor Sonko.

The government has repeatedly maintained that Miguna is not a Kenyan citizen, hence, will only be allowed into the country using his valid Canadian passport.

Immigration Principal Secretary Gordon Kihalangwa said Miguna must apply afresh to regain his Kenyan citizenship.

His nomination raised a storm but Sonko defended the choice saying Miguna was “anti-cartel” and would help him fight corruption in the Capital.

But Miguna declined the nomination terming it as “malicious distraction.”

During an interview on Citizen TV’s Power Breakfast show on June 11, Speaker Elachi said the nomination would go through due process regardless of whether the nominee (Miguna) is in the country or not.

“We will table the motion before the Assembly this week, I don’t want to talk much about it as it is a matter to be discussed before all members of the County Assembly, and once it is tabled, then from there it will move according to the Standing Orders.”said Alachi.

Sonko forwarded Miguna’s name to the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker on May 18 for vetting and approval, but the process appeared to have stalled.

MCAs allied to Jubilee Party had earlier on in different occasions stated that they will reject Miguna’s name once brought to the Assembly because he is not a member of the party.
