Nairobi: Ex-police inspector found guilty of severely assaulting hawker

A Nairobi court has convicted a former senior Administration Police (AP) officer for causing grievous harm to a hawker.

Delivering the judgement, Makadara Senior Principal Magistrate Angelo Kithinji ruled that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that former Inspector Gregory Wabwire assaulted Dominic Munyoki causing him serious head and leg injuries.

The court heard that Wabwire arrested Munyoki on December 31, 2011 and took him to the Chief’s camp at Huruma estate for allegedly refusing to remove a handcart that was blocking the road.

The officer had ordered the hawker to move the handcart but the man declined and explained that he was not the owner.

This angered the officer who took Munyoki to the Chief’s camp where he is said to have beaten him severely with a metal bar causing him several head injuries and a fracture on the leg.

At the time of the assault, Wabwire was the AP officer in charge of Mathare Division.

The sentencing has been set for February 14, 2019 before which a probation report is to be filed in court.
