Nairobi leads with nearly half of Kenyas 1,335 new COVID-19 infections; 30 dead

The Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced that the country’s capital Nairobi accounts for close to half of the 1,335 people that tested positive for COVID-19 from a sample size of 7,605 tested in the last 24 hours.

The positivity rate is now 17.5%, with total confirmed infections rising to 206,691 while cumulative tests so far conducted are 2,156,981.

The ministry also said 1,093 patients recovered from the disease; with 983 from Home-Based Isolation and Care while 110 were discharged from various health facilities across the country. Total recoveries stand at 191,188.

The Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe-led docket said 30 patients succumbed to the coronavirus, one of them in the last 24 hours while 29 are late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits in July and August, 2021. This pushes the cumulative fatalities to 4,025.

From new the cases, 1,293 are Kenyans while 42 are foreigners; 680 are females and 655 are males, while the youngest is an eight-month-old infant and the oldest is 105 years.

The cases were distributed across various counties namely; Nairobi 647, Nakuru 86, Kiambu 83, Kajiado 59, Mombasa 53, Nyandarua 52, Makueni 45, Machakos 40, Kirinyaga 36, Kilifi 27, Uasin Gishu 26, Murang’a 25, Lamu 16, Kitui 14, Baringo 12, Taita Taveta 12, Tana River 11, Embu 11, Marsabit 9, Kericho 8, Laikipia 8, Turkana 6, Meru 5, Nyeri 4, Kisumu 4, Siaya 4, Kwale 4, Wajir 3, Elgeyo Marakwet 3, Migori 3, Isiolo 3, Hama Bay 2, Tharaka Nithi 2, Kakamega 2, Kisii 1, Mandera 1, Nandi 1, Nyamira 1, Trans Nzoia 1, Vihiga 1, West Pokot 1, Bungoma 1, Busia 1 and Garissa had 1 case.

“A total of 1,587 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 4,125 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program. 178 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 43 of whom are on ventilatory support and 118 on supplemental oxygen,” read the statement signed by CS Kagwe.

“17 patients are under observation. Another 441 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 397 of them in general wards and 44 in High Dependency Units (HDU).”

A total of 1,741,581 vaccines have so far been administered across the country. Of these, total first doses are 1,071,297 while second doses are 670,284.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 62.6% with the majority being males at 55% while females are at 45%. Proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.46%.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 206,894; Others 195,687; Health Workers 116,723; Teachers 97,375; while Security Officers are at 53,605.
