Nairobi suffers major blackout as rains disrupt power

Heavy rainstorms Thursday evening caused power interruptions in most parts of Nairobi. The heavy rains that started late in the afternoon interrupted electricity supply and distribution systems in parts of the city.

According to a statement by the Kenya Power Company, customers affected include those residing in Eastlands, Umoja, Donholm, Komarock, the lower side of the Central Business District (CBD), Riverside drive and surrounding areas.

“Kenya Power engineers are currently engaged in the restoration process and everything is being done to minimize the duration of the interruption. Kenya Power highly regrets any inconvenience the interruptions have caused to the customers and requests for patience as the restoration exercise is underway,” read the statement.

This comes amid reports of flash floods that have rendered several city roads impassable.

Police have urged motorists to avoid Ojijo Road, Museum Hill Road, and the section of Thika Superhighway between Pangani and Muthaiga after several vehicles were stuck and others reportedly swept away.
