Nairobi to host 4th Social Media Week conference
Nairobi is expected to play host to the fourth edition of the Social Media Week (SMW) starting Tuesday next week.
The four-day conference will run from June 11 to 14 and brings together professionals in media, marketing and technology industries.
It is intended to provide participants with insights, ideas and opportunities to advance themselves and their organizations in a globally connected world.
The theme of this year’s Social Media Week, which is hosted by Go Gaga Experiential, is Stories.
“Social media has become the world’s most influential storytelling platform. Whatever form they take, the stories we tell through social media have the power to reach and influence more than 60% of people on the planet. The stories we tell have the ability to touch and inspire, and shake people to their cores,” says Toby Daniels, the Founder and Executive Director, Social Media Week.
According to Toby Daniels, social media is at a critical moment which calls for the sector players to use their influence in a positive manner.
“Many fear that we have already failed as an industry, allowing it to distort our realities and divide us. That can change: We can work together to be more truthful and real in our content, our communication, and with our connections.
“The first step is to embrace our responsibility, accept that we have a critical role to play in ensuring that we can use our influence for good,” he says.
“Help us tell stories—whether for profit or to simply engage and enthrall—that leave a lasting impression of the people who consume them, and make them worthy of our time and attention.”
Some of the key speakers in this year’s conference set to be held at Mövenpick Hotel include Samantha Olivia, Head of Operations for Turn Left Media, Dorcas Muthoni, CEO and founder Openworld Ltd and Sipho Hlela, the Account Executive for East Africa at Meltwater.
ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru and former Information PS and Prof. Bitange Ndemo are among the speakers who addressed previous editions of Social Media Week in Nairobi.
Conference passes are available on a limited first-come basis.
