Nairobi workers threaten to down tools over unpaid salaries

The Nairobi County Government Workers Union has protested over the delayed pay by the county government and the union has now threatened to down tools on Monday, July 17 over unpaid June salaries.

The Union Secretary, Boniface Waweru, says Nairobi County Workers have not been paid their June salaries and no explanation has been given to them.

Waweru has further accused the County Government of failing to remit statutory deductions like NHIF, pensions and payment of terminal dues to retirees.

In a letter to Nairobi County Secretary, Robert Ayisi, Waweru has accused the County Government of backtracking on it’s earlier promise to release payment of salaries not later than the 5th day of every preceding month.

Waweru has said Nairobi County Government workers will on Monday, July 17 storm City Hall to demand for their dues.

However, Nairobi County Secretary, Robert Ayisi, has assured the workers that their delayed salaries will be paid by Friday, July 14 and blamed the delay on the slow processing of financial requests by the Controller of Budget at the Central Bank of Kenya.

Jubilee Party Nairobi County governor candidate, Mike Sonko, has joined the workers in condemning the delayed payments of salaries and he has accused Governor Evans Kidero of incompetence and carelessness.

“The delay of salaries of County workers is symptomatic of the gross mismanagement we are witnessing under Governor Kidero. Nairobi should not be facing financial challenges other counties might be facing given the huge revenue the county collects,” said Sonko while reacting to the workers protest.
