Naivasha among the top regions in diabetes cases

Naivasha town has  now been ranked as one of the leading regions in Kenya with  the highest number of people living with diabetes.

Speaking during a one day medical camp organized by Safaricom Limited in Naivasha, Dr. Oren Ombiro attributed the rise in diabetes cases to poor lifestyle.

He pointed out that minors are mostly affected.

“Half of these minors are under free insulin treatment courtesy of Safaricom and Diabetes management information center which has partnered with us in offering medical camps,” he said.

He said that currently there were close to 600 patients receiving diabetes care at the Naivasha sub-county hospital.

25 of these are minors who have benefited from the awareness and screening at community levels.

“We have partnered with Safaricom and other medical institutions to set up medical camps for the ‘mwananchi’ and this has helped us tame some cases of non-communicable diseases, with over 5,000 patients benefiting from the free medical services.” he said.

Nakuru County health chief officer Dr Samuel Mwaura said that doctors were keen on screening patients as one way of dealing with non-communicable diseases alongside diabetes.

Mwaura said that the county had in the last three years employed an estimated fifty doctors and sent them to rural areas to deal with the challenges there.

“Previously the doctors were stationed at major hospitals but we have changed tactics and we are now sending them to rural health facilities,” he said.

He said that the new outlet would help area residents access their services adding that plans were underway to open more outlets in the Rift Valley region.
