Man who killed, ate women could walk free

Nakuru High Court has now given the prosecution the final and last adjournment for the suspected serial killer commonly referred to as the Naivasha Vampire Njoroge Matheri alias Fongo’s witnesses to appear before court.

While delivering the ruling, Justice Maureen Odera said that the prosecution must avail all the witnesses before court on July 21st for the case to proceed.

The prosecution had earlier argued that six of the 14 witnesses are policemen and that they are in different regions.

The prosecution indicated that three were based in Lamu, Mpeketoni and Busia, but are yet to trace where the other three police officers are.

Matheri’s lawyer, however, said that his client has been in custody since 2008 and many of the witnesses’ didn’t give any reason why they are not present in court to testify.

In 2008, two women were rescued from a house in Naivasha’s Kihoto slums in bad shape.

The two, Esther Akinyi and Naomi Wanjiru, could barely speak and claimed to have been kidnapped, raped and drugged by Matheri, who drained and drunk their blood as they watched.

Chilling details emerged at the High Court in Nakuru during the hearing as Esther narrated how Matheri drained her blood into a metallic cup as she watched and proceeded to chew Esther’s flesh while using her blood as his drink.

In 2011, a Naivasha court sentenced Matheri to four years in prison for kidnapping after police failed to adduce evidence to prove rape.

In 2013, the self-confessed ‘vampire’ was charged before Justice Anyara Emukule for the murder of Miriam Wairimu on August 29, 2008 at Kihoto area in Naivasha.

The case has been adjourned several times; On December 12, 2012, Senior Resident Magistrate Gerald Muuo Mutiso adjourned the hearing because there was no police file, On January 18, 2013 the prosecution had no witnesses while on April 17, 2014 prosecution was not ready.

The court has now set the hearing of the case for July 21, 2015.
