Nakuru County Assembly Speaker faces impeachment

A fallout between Nakuru County Assembly Speaker Joel Maina Kairu and a majority of MCAs saw a notice of motion to impeach him handed to the Clerk.

The motion, spearheaded by Biashara Ward MCA Njoroge Nyaguthii and his Mosop Ward counterpart Daniel Mutai, has so far seen 60 out of 78 MCAs append their signatures.

A meeting convened by the Speaker on Tuesday failed to take place as a majority of the MCAs reportedly went for a retreat in Nyahururu to lay strategy on how to impeach the former Roads CEC.

Some of the accusations leveled against Speaker Kairu include abuse of office, irregular hiring of staff through the County Assembly Public Service Board, as well as failure to approve trips for the MCAs.

Mutai said that they will not give in to calls for dialogue as they have already made up their minds to impeach the Speaker.

Majority Leader and Naivasha East Ward representative Stanley Karanja stated that they had on many occasions swep the issue under the carpet but would not do it anymore.
